My refurbished iPhone 12 Pro Max is over 3 years old and the battery health is now 70%.
I honestly expected the phone to be struggling badly by now, but I still use it every day I still take photos and videos I will admit i'm happy with this iPhone, it still handle my normal daily use, and i'm impressed with how well this phone has held up.
That does not mean every iPhone at 70% battery health will perform the same. Battery condition depends on age, charging habits, usage, temperature, battery quality and the condition of the phone itself. But if your are searching because your iPhone is around 70% and you are wondering whether you must replace the battery immediately, my experience shows the that percentage alone does not tell the whole story.
Battery health measures how much maximum capacity the battery can hold compared to when it was new. A reading of 70% means the battery can hold substantially less energy than originally could.
Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain about 80% of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. Apple also notes that actual battery capacity depends on how the phone is used and charged.
So 70% is clearly below that 80% benchmark. But the practical question for an owner is not only what percentage does the screen show? It is also does the phone still do what I need it to do?
You may want to keep using the iPhone if.
It still lasts long enough for your normal day.
It does not shut down unexpectedly.
Performance still feels acceptable.
Charging more often is not causing you a problem.
You are otherwise happy with the phone.
Battery replacement may make more sense if.
The phone dies much faster than you can tolerate.
You are charging several times per day.
You experience unexpected shutdowns.
Performance has become noticeably worse.
You want to keep the phone for another year or more.
Apple itself advises users whose performance has been affected by an aged battery to consider battery service options.
In my case, the number surprised me more than the phone did. My battery health is around 70%, but the phone is still usefull to me every day.
I still enjoy the camera. I still use it for photos and videos. I still use it for normal every day tasks, including editing, design, watching football and listening to music and it has not reached the point where I feel the phone itself needs replacing.
That is why I would not personally judge a used or refurbished iPhone only by one battery health number. I would look at the whole phone battery life in real use, condition, performance, storage, unlocked status, seller quality, return policy and price.
If you are shopping for a refurbished iPhone, battery health matters but it should not be the only thing you compare.
Battery health or battery condition information;
Unlocked/carrier status.
Storage capacity.
Cosmetic condition.
Seller reputation.
Return period.
Warranty.
Total price.
Marketplace.
If you still like your current iPhone and the battery is the main problem, replacing the battery may be the cheaper option.
But if the iPhone has other problems, you want newer features, more storage, better cameras, longer software support or simply prefer upgrading, then comparing another refurbished iPhone may make more sense.
